Future Learning Theatre (Curated by EdCity)
Overview
Literacy is fundamental to all areas of development, including economic, social, cognitive, and vocational domains. Despite the growth in the number of readers worldwide, reading comprehension remains alarmingly low. To address this, the speaker proposes the implementation of pedagogical tools such as Literature Out Loud (Pre-Texts) from Harvard University. This approach allows students to engage with texts, pose questions to challenge their peers, and create visual arts based on the texts. Literature Out Loud is a simple yet rigorous method that can be adapted to any curriculum and cultural context.
Proficiency in English is essential for success in today's interconnected world. However, lots of students struggle to communicate effectively in English due to a lack of authentic language learning opportunities. To address this issue, the speaker introduces authentic English experiences for all students. This involves offering choices in reading materials, implementing Self-regulated Learning English Reading across the Curriculum programmes, facilitating virtual exchange programmes, organizing global dialogues with foreign guests during the school's Global Week and most recently, Literature Maker to bring emergent technologies into STREAM education and Literature in English, serving as a hub to explore STREAM-related maker projects, and English reading activities.
