Advancing Cultural and Environmental Sustainability in and through Music Education
Well-being Theatre | DEI Theatre (Curated by EdCity)
Overview
In this seminar, the speaker will address sustainability issues that can be tackled through music education, focusing specifically on cultural and environmental sustainability.
For cultural sustainability, the speaker will introduce examples of 3D-printed musical instruments for Chinese and other Asian music traditions. 3D printing technologies have been utilised for purposes such as restoration, replication, innovation, and experimentation.
Drawing on speaker's own work and that of his students, the speaker will explore how these efforts contribute to preserving and advancing cultural traditions within music education.
For environmental sustainability, the speaker will highlight the importance of fostering ‘eco-musicality’—an approach that integrates environmental awareness into music education. Eco-musicality is the competencies that musicians develop to engage with and enhance their musical and ecological experiences. It encompasses various dimensions of musical engagement, extending beyond mere awareness and knowledge of environmental issues.
